Asteroids are bodies of rock or ice that are too small to be planets. Most asteroids orbit between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, but there are many asteroids with much different orbits.

Some asteroids are made of ices and organic compounds. Such are called volatile materials. Others asteroids are made of rocky materials such as iron and nickel.
